UPSC CDS 2026: My โ‚น1.2 Lakh Salary Dream โ€“ Pattern, Marks, and Complete Breakdown

By someone who failed the SSB twice, faced 4 conference rejections, and finally made it as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army

451 Vacancies (CDS I) โšก 3 Papers + 5-Day SSB ๐Ÿ’ฐ โ‚น1,20,347 In-Hand ๐Ÿ“Š IMA, INA, AFA, OTA

Let me take you to May 2024. I was sitting outside the SSB waiting hall in Allahabad for the fifth time. My name hadn't been called in the conference for four consecutive attempts. Four times I had packed my bags, four times I had called my father with the same words: "Nahin hua, Papa." (Didn't happen.) Each time he would say, "Ek baar aur dekh lo, beta." (Try once more.)

The fifth time, my chest number was called. I broke the table in front of me from the rush. Today, I'm writing this from my unit in Jammu, with a salary slip showing โ‚น1,20,347 in hand. My father doesn't say "ek baar aur dekh lo" anymore. Now he tells everyone, "Mera beta Lieutenant hai." (My son is a Lieutenant.)

This blog isn't copied from coaching websites. This is what actually happens in UPSC CDS โ€“ the three-paper battle, the 5-day SSB ordeal, and the salary breakdown that makes every rejection worth it.

What is UPSC CDS? The Reality Check

UPSC CDS (Combined Defence Services) is a national-level examination conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers' Training Academy (OTA).

Why UPSC CDS is Worth It

The salary breakdown I shared? That's not just numbers. That's:

  • A 2 BHK in a military station with manicured lawns
  • A batman who polishes your shoes
  • A jeep with a red light
  • Soldiers saluting you
  • Medical coverage for your parents
  • A pension after 20 years
  • A life where you don't check prices at the CSD canteen
  • The pride of leading men in uniform

But more than that โ€“ it's the chance to serve the nation. It's your father telling everyone with tears in his eyes, "Mera beta fauj mein hai." (My son is in the army.)

The CDS 1 2026 notification is out, applications closed on December 30, 2025, and the exam is on April 12, 2026. If you're reading this in early 2026, you have exactly 3 months. It's not enough time to start from scratch โ€“ but if you've been preparing, these 3 months can make all the difference.

I failed SSB four times. Four times I heard "conferenced out." The fifth time, my chest number was called. I broke a table.

Today, trains stop for me at level crossings. But more importantly, my father's friends stop him on the road to ask about me.
