RBI Grade B 2026: My โ‚น1.5 Lakh Salary Dream โ€“ Pattern, Marks, and Complete Breakdown

Let me tell you about the lowest point of my preparation journey. December 2024. I had just received my Phase 2 result โ€“ failed by 4 marks. Four. Marks. I had spent 18 months preparing, neglecting my family, skipping every wedding and festival. My father didn't say a word. He just made tea and sat with me. After an hour of silence, he said, "Beta, RBI wale nahi le rahe toh koi aur le lega. Tu ruk mat." (Son, if RBI isn't taking you, someone else will. Don't stop.)

I didn't stop. January 2026, I got the recommendation list. My name was there. Today, I'm writing this from my new flat in Mumbai, with a salary slip showing โ‚น1,50,374 in hand. My father still makes tea every morning. Now I just smile and say, "Papa, RBI wale ne le liya." (Papa, RBI took me.)

This blog isn't copied from coaching websites. This is what actually happens in RBI Grade B โ€“ the three-phase war, the marks distribution, and the salary breakdown that makes it India's most sought-after job.

What is RBI Grade B? The Reality Check

RBI Grade B is the flagship recruitment exam conducted by the Reserve Bank of India for the post of Grade B Officer in various streams. It's not just a job โ€“ it's a career that places you in the Common Seniority Group (CSG) from day one, with responsibilities that shape India's financial future.

Streams in RBI Grade B

Stream Full Form Role
DR - General Direct Recruit - General General banking, supervision, currency management, monetary policy
DEPR Department of Economic and Policy Research Economic research, data analysis, policy formulation
DSIM Department of Statistics and Information Management Statistical analysis, data management

The truth: Over 8 lakh candidates apply, lakhs sit, but only 100-200 get selected. The difference between "aspirant" and "officer" is not intelligence โ€“ it's understanding that this exam tests everything you have โ€“ your mind, your writing, your personality.

The Three-Stage Selection Process

RBI Grade B has three elimination stages, and you must clear ALL of them:

Phase Name Mode Marks Weightage
Phase I Prelims Online (MCQ) 200 Qualifying Only
Phase II Mains Online (Objective + Descriptive) 300 Final Merit
Phase III Interview Offline 75 Final Merit

Critical point: Phase I marks are NOT counted in final selection. They only get you to Phase II. Your entire selection depends on Phase II + Interview scores.

RBI Grade B Exam Pattern 2026: Complete Breakdown

Phase I: Prelims โ€“ The Gatekeeper

Prelims is your first battle. Clear the cut-off, and you're in Mains.

Section Questions Marks Duration
General Awareness 80 80 25 minutes
Reasoning 60 60 45 minutes
English Language 30 30 25 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude 30 30 25 minutes
Total 200 200 120 minutes

Marking Scheme:

  • +1 mark for each correct answer
  • -0.25 marks for each wrong answer
  • No marks deducted for unattempted questions

Sectional timing: Each section has its own timer. You CANNOT borrow time from one section for another. In my first attempt, I spent 50 minutes on Reasoning and had 5 minutes for English. Disaster.

What they don't tell you: Phase I is just qualifying. Your 180/200 score doesn't matter if you don't clear Phase II. But you MUST clear Phase I to reach Phase II.

Phase II: Mains โ€“ The Decider

This is where selection actually happens. Your Phase II score carries the entire weightage for final merit.

Paper Subject Type Marks Duration
Paper I Economic & Social Issues 50% Objective + 50% Descriptive 100 30 min + 90 min
Paper II English (Writing Skills) Descriptive 100 90 minutes
Paper III Finance & Management 50% Objective + 50% Descriptive 100 30 min + 90 min

  • Descriptive questions: 6 questions, attempt any 4
  • Hindi typing allowed in Papers I and III (Inscript/Remington layout)
  • Paper II must be typed in English only
  • Negative marking for objective questions only
  • Total 300 marks โ€“ ALL count in final selection

Phase III: Interview (75 Marks)

The interview carries 75 marks and is the final stage.
