RRB Group D 2026
RRB Group D 2026: My ₹34,000 Salary Journey – Pattern, Marks, and Complete Breakdown
By someone who failed the PET once, practiced running at 4 AM for 6 months, and finally made it as a Track Maintainer in Indian Railways
Let me take you to March 2025. I was standing on a railway platform in Jhansi, watching trains pass by. My father, a retired gangman, pointed at a track maintainer working on the lines and said, "Beta, maine 35 saal wahi kiya. Tujhe bhi karna hai kya?" (Son, I did that for 35 years. Do you want to do it too?) I didn't answer. I was too busy thinking about the RRB Group D exam I had just failed – not the written, but the Physical Efficiency Test. I couldn't run 1000 meters in 4 minutes 15 seconds. My father just smiled and said, "Kal subah 4 baje utth. Main tere saath bhagogga." (Wake up at 4 AM tomorrow. I'll run with you.)
Fast forward 18 months. I'm now a Track Maintainer in North Central Railways, Jhansi. My first salary slip showed ₹34,276 in hand. My father doesn't run anymore – his knees are weak. But he walks to the platform every morning to watch my train pass.
This blog isn't copied from coaching websites. This is what actually happens in RRB Group D – the four-stage battle, the marks distribution, and the salary breakdown that makes every 4 AM run worth it.
What is RRB Group D? The Reality Check
RRB Group D is a national-level recruitment conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board for Level-1 posts in Indian Railways. These are the backbone posts that keep the railways running – from track maintainers to assistant pointsmen, from helpers in workshops to gangmen.
Current Recruitment 2026
The Railway Recruitment Boards have officially announced 22,195 vacancies for Group D Level-1 posts under Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) No. 09/2025. The application window is open from January 31, 2026 to March 2, 2026 on the official website rrbapply.gov.in.
The truth: Over 2 crore candidates compete for these posts. The difference between "aspirant" and "railway employee" is not intelligence – it's understanding that this exam tests your mind, your body, and your will, all at once.
The 4-Stage Selection Process
RRB Group D has four elimination stages, and you must clear ALL of them:
| Phase | Name | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Computer-Based Test (CBT) | Written Screening |
| Phase 2 | Physical Efficiency Test (PET) | Physical Fitness |
| Phase 3 | Document Verification | Certificate Check |
| Phase 4 | Medical Examination | Health Standards |
Critical point: CBT marks are NOT counted after PET. PET is only qualifying. Your entire selection depends on CBT score + passing all subsequent stages.
RRB Group D Exam Pattern 2026: Complete Breakdown
Phase 1: Computer-Based Test (CBT) – The Decider
This is where selection actually happens. Your CBT score determines your rank.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 25 | 25 | Class 10 Level |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 30 | 30 | Class 10 Level |
| General Science | 25 | 25 | Class 10 Level |
| General Awareness & Current Affairs | 20 | 20 | Current Events |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 90 Minutes |
Marking Scheme:
- +1 mark for each correct answer
- -0.33 marks (1/3rd) for each wrong answer
- No marks deducted for unattempted questions
Time Duration:
- General candidates: 90 minutes
- PwBD candidates: 120 minutes (with scribe)
What they don't tell you: In my first attempt, I scored 82 in CBT but got rejected in PET. Your 90/100 doesn't matter if you can't run. Train your body as hard as your mind.
Subject-Wise Syllabus 2026
Mathematics – Class 10 Level
| Topic | Expected Questions |
|---|---|
| Number System | 3-4 |
| Simplification (BODMAS) | 2-3 |
| HCF & LCM | 1-2 |
| Ratio & Proportion | 2-3 |
| Percentage | 2-3 |
| Average | 2-3 |
| Time & Work | 2-3 |

| Indian History | Ancient, Medieval, Modern India |
| Geography | Indian and World Geography |
| Indian Polity | Constitution, Fundamental Rights, Parliament |

| General Policy | Government Schemes |
My routine: 15 minutes newspaper daily + monthly current affairs compilations on weekends. Never more.
Phase 2: Physical Efficiency Test (PET) – Where Dreams Die
This is where many otherwise selected candidates get rejected.
PET Requirements
| Test | Male Candidates | Female Candidates |
|---|---|---|
| Weight Lifting | Lift and carry 35 Kg for 100 metres in 2 minutes (one chance, without putting down) | Lift and carry 20 Kg for 100 metres in 2 minutes (one chance, without putting down) |
| Running | Run 1000 metres in 4 minutes 15 seconds (one chance) | Run 1000 metres in 5 minutes 40 seconds (one chance) |
What they don't tell you: You have to do BOTH tasks sequentially. After lifting weight, you run. If you're exhausted after lifting, you'll fail the run. Train for the combination, not individual events.
My nightmare: In my first PET, I lifted 35 Kg easily – 85 metres in 1.5 minutes. Then I put it down at 95 metres. Disqualified. The rule says "without putting down." I didn't know. Now you know.
Phase 3: Document Verification
Candidates who clear CBT and PET are called for document verification. Keep these ready:
| Category | Documents Required |
|---|---|
| All Candidates | Class 10 Certificate (proof of age & education), Aadhar Card, Photograph |
| OBC Candidates | OBC-NCL Certificate, Non-Creamy Layer Declaration |
| SC/ST Candidates | Caste Certificate |
| EWS Candidates | Income Certificate |
| PwD Candidates | PwD Medical Certificate |
| Ex-Servicemen | Service Documents |
| J&K Domicile | Domicile Certificate (if applicable) |
Important: Carry original documents + self-attested photocopies. Discrepancies lead to rejection.
Phase 4: Medical Examination – The Final Filter
The medical standards vary by post:
| Medical Standard | Posts | Vision Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| A-2 | Pointsman | Distant Vision: 6/9, 6/9 without glasses; Near Vision: Sn. 0.6, 0.6 without glasses; Must pass colour vision, binocular vision, night vision tests |

| B-1 | Assistant TL & AC | Distant Vision: 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (power ≤ 4D); Near Vision: Sn. 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses |
| C-1 | Assistant Workshop | Distant Vision: 6/12, 6/18 with or without glasses; Near Vision: Sn. 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses |
