RRB Group D: The "Railway Bharti" Exam โ€“ Ground Realities from the Platform to the Position

By a Railway Aspirant Who Tracked This Exam for Three Years

Railway Recruitment โšก 4 Stages of Selection ๐Ÿƒ 1.6 km in 5:45 ๐Ÿ“Š 0.5% Selection Rate

Let me start with a scene I witnessed at a railway station last year.

A young guy, maybe 22-23, was standing near the platform with a group of friends. All of them were talking about one thing โ€“ "Group D ka form kab aayega?" "This time pakka selection hoga." "Previous year cut off dekh liya?"

Then the train arrived. A railway employee in uniform โ€“ dirty hands, sweat on forehead, but that confident look โ€“ walked past them. One of the guys whispered, "Yahi toh ban na hai."

That's RRB Group D for you. It's not just an exam. It's a dream that lakhs of Indians chase every year. The chance to wear that uniform, to work for Indian Railways, to have that job security that nothing else in India offers.

After talking to selected candidates, physical trainers, railway employees, and teachers who've spent years preparing students for this exam, here's the unfiltered truth about RRB Group D.

Pehle Samjhein: RRB Group D Hai Kya?

RRB Group D ka matlab hai Railway Recruitment Board ka Level 1 posts ke liye exam. Ye positions hain โ€“ Track Maintainer, Helper, Pointsman, Gateman, Porter, Safaiwala, aur aisi hi kai posts jo Indian Railways ke rozmarra ke operations ke liye zaroori hain.

Ek railway employee ne bataya: "Group D wale log railways ki backbone hain. Track maintainer nahi hoga toh train kaise chalegi? Gateman nahi hoga toh crossing safe kaise hogi? Yeh posts chhoti lagti hain, par inke bina railways ruk jayegi."

Kya posts aati hain:

  • Track Maintainer (Track par kaam)
  • Helper (Workshops mein)
  • Pointsman (Station par)
  • Gateman (Railway crossings par)
  • Porter (Platform par)
  • Safaiwala (Cleaning)
  • Aur bhi kai posts
Ek selected candidate ne bataya: "Log sochte hain Group D matlab sirf safai karna. Par bahut saari posts hain. Mujhe Pointsman mila โ€“ station par duty, signal handle karna, trains ko guide karna. Izzat bhi milti hai, kaam bhi hai."

Scale: 40-50 lakh candidates apply for roughly 1-1.5 lakh vacancies. Selection rate โ€“ less than 0.5%. Tough hai, par impossible nahi.

Selection Process: Chaar Stage Ki Jung

Stage 1: Computer Based Test (CBT) โ€“ 90 Sawaal, 90 Minute

CBT mein 90 sawaal hote hain, 90 marks, 90 minutes. Chaar sections:

  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: 30 sawaal
  • General Awareness: 30 sawaal
  • Mathematics: 30 sawaal
  • General Science: 30 sawaal (haan, 90 ke 90, par kuch sources ke hisaab se 100 bhi ho sakte hain โ€“ pattern change hota hai)
Ek teacher ne samjhaya: "Group D ka paper CGL ya CPO se easy hota hai. Par easy ka matlab ye nahi ki tum bina padhe clear kar loge. Easy paper mein sabke marks aate hain, isliye accuracy aur speed dono chahiye."

Section-wise breakdown (as per recent patterns):

General Intelligence & Reasoning: 30 sawaal

  • Puzzles kam aati hain, direct sawaal zyada
  • Analogy, classification, series, coding-decoding โ€“ ye sab aata hai
Ek selected candidate: "Reasoning mein time mat lagao. Agar 30 second mein samajh nahi aaya, chhod do. Baad mein aaoge toh bhi ho jayega."

General Awareness: 30 sawaal

  • Current affairs โ€“ last 6 months important
  • Railways specific โ€“ zones, headquarters, important trains, schemes
  • Static GK โ€“ countries, capitals, awards
Ek teacher: "General Awareness mein Railways ke questions pakke aate hain. Kaunsa zone kahan hai, railway budget kya tha, naye trains kaunsa launch hui โ€“ ye sab padho. Ye free marks hain."

Mathematics: 30 sawaal

  • Class 8-10 level โ€“ percentage, profit-loss, simple interest, ratio, time & work
  • Simplification โ€“ sabse easy, ye pehle karo
Ek selected candidate: "Math mein formula yaad rakhna zaroori hai. Par usse bhi zaroori hai โ€“ practice. Roz 50-60 sawaal karo, speed apne aap aa jayegi."

General Science: 30 sawaal

  • Physics, Chemistry, Biology โ€“ class 10 level
  • Life science โ€“ plants, human body, diseases
Ek teacher: "Science ke questions mostly NCERT se aate hain. Class 8-10 ki science books acchi tarah padho. Bahut kaam aayega."

Cutoff ki asliyat: General category mein 65-70+ marks lagte hain (state ke hisaab se). OBC mein 60-65, SC/ST mein 50-55. Par har saal cutoffs badh rahe hain.

Stage 2: Physical Efficiency Test (PET) โ€“ Jahan Sapne Tootte Hain

PET RRB Group D ka sabse bada filter hai. Aur yahan sabse zyada log fail hote hain.

Male candidates ke liye:

  • 1.6 km run (1000 meter nahi, 1600 meter) โ€“ 5 minutes 45 seconds mein (kuch railways mein 6 minutes)
  • 35 kg weight lift โ€“ 3 feet ki height tak (kuch railways mein nahi hota)

Female candidates ke liye:

  • 1 km run โ€“ 5 minutes 15 seconds mein
  • 20 kg weight lift โ€“ 3 feet tak
Ek physical trainer ne bataya: "Log sochte hain 1.6 km bhagna hai, aasan hai. Par 5 minute 45 second mein 1.6 km matlab har 400 meter 1.5 minute mein. Ye sprint nahi, endurance hai. Bahut log pehle lap mein bhagne lagte hain, fir 800 meter ke baad thak ke gir jaate hain."

Weight lift ka scene:

Ek candidate ne experience share kiya: "Maine kabhi weight nahi uthaya tha. Socha running pe focus karunga. PET ke din 35 kg ka bag diya โ€“ uthaya, par 3 feet tak nahi utha paaya. Fail. Agle saal gym join kiya, 6 mahine weight training ki. Tab utha paaya."

PET ki taiyari kaise karein:

Ek trainer ki salah: "Running roz karo. Track pe bhaago, road pe nahi. Pehla 400 meter slow, second medium, third fast, last full sprint. Breath control seekho. Weight lift ke liye โ€“ gym join karo. Squats, deadlifts, shoulder press โ€“ ye sab practice karo."

Important: PET sirf qualifying hai. Ismein marks nahi milte. Par agar PET clear nahi kiya, toh CBT ke marks kuch kaam nahi aate.

Stage 3: Physical Standard Test (PST) โ€“ Naap Tol Ka Khel

PST mein aapki height aur chest measure hoti hai. Aur yahan koi relaxation nahi hai.

Minimum Requirements (General category):

Male:

  • Height: 157.5 cm (5 feet 2 inches) โ€“ zone ke hisaab se kam zyada ho sakta hai
  • Chest: 81 cm (unexpanded), 86 cm (expanded) โ€“ 5 cm expansion mandatory

Female:

  • Height: 152 cm (5 feet)
  • Chest measurement female candidates ke liye nahi hoti

Zone-wise variation:

  • Southern zones mein height kam ho sakti hai (152 cm for male)
  • Hills zones mein bhi relaxation milti hai
  • Reserved categories ko bhi relaxation milta hai
Ek medical officer (retired) ne bataya: "Har saal 100-200 candidates height mein reject hote hain. Wo 157.5 mein 157 aa gaya, reject. Koi sympathy nahi. Measurement digital hoti hai, dhokha possible nahi."

Ek heartbreaking story: Ek candidate 157.4 cm ka tha. Reject ho gaya. Ro raha tha ki "2 millimeter ke liye saal barbaad." Par rules rules hote hain.

Stage 4: Document Verification โ€“ Kagazi Karwai

Yahan par aapke sabhi documents check hote hain. Ek chhoti si galti aapka selection khatam kar sakti hai.

Required documents:

  • 10th marksheet (age proof aur educational qualification dono)
  • Caste certificate (SC/ST/OBC ke liye)
  • Domicile certificate (agar zone ke hisaab se apply kiya hai)
  • Character certificate
  • Medical certificate (kuch cases mein)
Ek railway employee ne bataya: "Ek candidate mera dost tha. Sab clear kiya, PET bhi, medical bhi. Document verification mein pata chala โ€“ uske 10th marksheet mein date of birth galat thi. Reject. Certificate correction karwana padta hai pehle se."

The Mistakes I Saw Repeated

1. "Paper Easy Hai" Syndrome

Ek teacher ne kaha: "Bacche kehte hain โ€“ Group D ka paper toh easy hai, 1 mahine mein ho jayega. Phir attempt karte hain, 40-50 marks aate hain, aur kehte hain paper hard tha. Easy paper mein competition zyada hota hai, isliye accuracy chahiye."

2. Physical Ko Ignore Karna

Yeh sabse common mistake hai. Ek physical trainer: "Log CBT clear karte hain, phir PET ki tension lete hain. Tab tak bahut late ho chuka hota hai. Running ki body build hone mein 3-6 mahine lagte hain. Start from day one."

3. Railways Specific GK Na Padhna

Ek selected candidate: "Maine general current affairs to padhe, par railways ke baare mein kuch nahi padha. Paper mein pucha โ€“ 'First railway station in India?' 'How many railway zones?' Mujhe nahi aate the. 5-6 sawaal chhoot gaye."

4. Science Ko Ignore Karna

Art background walo ki ye problem hoti hai. Ek teacher: "Art wale sochte hain science nahi aati, chhod do. Par General Science mein 30 sawaal hote hain. NCERT padho, basic science aata hai. Bahut simple sawaal aate hain."

5. Weight Lift Ki Practice Na Karna

Ek candidate jo PET mein fail hua: "Maine sirf running ki. Weight lift ka socha bhi nahi. PET mein jab 35 kg ka bag diya, utha nahi paaya. Agle saal gym join kiya. Tab pata chala weight lift ki bhi technique hoti hai."

6. Mock Tests Na Dena

Ek trainer: "Mock test ke bina pata nahi chalta ki actual exam mein kya hoga. Time management kaise karna hai, kis section ko pehle karna hai โ€“ ye sab mock se seekho."

The Strategy That Actually Works

For Written Exam (CBT):

Phase 1: Foundation (Months 1-2)

  • Math: NCERT class 6-10. Basics clear karo
  • Science: Class 8-10 ki science books โ€“ physics, chemistry, biology
  • Reasoning: Practice daily. Ye sabse scoring section hai
  • GK: Newspaper roz padho. Railways specific notes banao

Phase 2: Practice (Months 3-4)

  • Sectional tests โ€“ har roz ek section ka test do
  • Weak areas identify karo โ€“ aur unpar focus karo
  • For math โ€“ percentage, profit-loss, ratio โ€“ ye high frequency topics hain

Phase 3: Mock Tests (Months 5-6)

  • Roz ek mock test
  • Analysis karo โ€“ kahan galti hui, kyun hui
  • Accuracy 85%+ rakho
  • Time management seekho โ€“ kaunsa section pehle karna hai

Exam day strategy:

  • Pehle easy sections karo โ€“ reasoning, GK, science
  • Math last mein karo โ€“ time lage to bhi tension nahi
  • Jo sawaal nahi aata, uspe time mat do โ€“ guess karo
